Where I’m at with the project
Finally, I found a viable program to use for my project! I’ve committed to using Scalar, which is a free, open-source authoring and publishing platform that’s designed to make it easy for authors to write long-form, born-digital scholarship online. The program can assemble media from multiple sources and pair them with the user’s writing in a variety of ways. On top of that, little to no knowledge of the program is required, as there are plenty of tutorials for that. As I am learning the program, I am moving things over from my ArcGIS prototype and incorporating them into Scalar. Since I am new to the program, I am moving over a little at a time. Thankfully, everything is coming together for our future presentation.
Current issues I am having
As of right now, the only issues I have revolve around my lack of understanding of Scalar. Unlike ArcGIS, I don’t have a full semester or two of experience in the program and I’m essentially learning on the fly. However, this has been supplemented by countless hours going through the tutorials provided by Scalar. There are still elements to the program I still want to know how to use, like if I can create subchapters in the table of contents and seeing if I can divide the project into how I wanted. While I am open to adjusting the project as needed, the biggest issue I faced will revolve around the project’s setup in Scalar.
Things that I am planning to do
Everything I aim to do from here on out revolves around three things. First off, I aim to import everything over from ArcGIS to Scalar, while continuing to add on more research and content as needed. Secondly, I aim to continue furthering my understanding of the program while also dividing the project to my liking. Lastly, I’ll focus on adjusting the project as needed for current and future use through the program’s capabilities and feedback from the professor and classmates. Overall, I expect everything to be relatively smoother than it has been over the last several updates.
